Assignment for Monday, March 25, 2019 RED WOLF

OK, this has several parts.  Here's the overview:  I want you to carefully read six issues of a Marvel comics series, then write a brief reaction/response.

The series is called "Red Wolf," and it features a Native American protagonist who has come up several times in the Marvel universe since the 70s.  The one we're looking at came up in 2015 and was canceled after six issues.

(The covers are by Jeffrey Veregge, a Native American artist.  You can learn a little about him HERE.)

Themes worth noticing, in light of our prior discussion:  civilization vs. "savagery", Indians in the past vs. in the present, community and law, the fetishizing of Indian "powers", Indian virtues, and so on.

We know that the authors and artists mean well.  I'm interested in your identification of what seems admirable about the series, and what seems unfortunate.

That is, I want you to explain one "good" feature, and one "bad" feature.  One page each.  So that's a total of two pages.  This is to be typed and submitted in class.  You can focus on the art as well as on the "text," or on the synthesis of the two.  That's up to you.

This is not a difficult assignment, but really soaking, reflectively, in the comics will give you more to think about.

OK, so the series is online, but it takes a bit of clicking to get the navigation right.  I will link you to the "index" page.  From there, read the issues in numerical order.  To advance from one page to the next, simply click anywhere on it.  You'll see, but if you have any trouble, let me know.

The index page is HERE.
